Local Real Property Tax Exemption

Homeowners age 65 and older may reduce their real property tax. Persons with disabilities may also qualify for an exemption (even if they are younger than 65). A person age 65 with a disability, however cannot receive both exemptions for the same municipal tax purpose. They may qualify for other exemptions, such as those for School Tax Relief (STAR), veterans, etc. in addition to either of these options.

Each locality sets its own maximum income standard under which property owners may qualify yearly for exemption. Check with your local assessors or clerks and school district to determine what options you have. Your assessor's number can be found in the "blue pages" of your phone book.
